Canadian Business Grants

I often get asked about business grants. Unfortunately, small businesses interested in government grants are often not the ones that meet the criteria for a business grant or are looking to fund expenses with a grant that are not covered by grants.

Established government grant programs exist for:

research and development (R&D) of new technology

exporting goods into new foreign markets

job training for employees

hiring post-secondary or summer students for short term employment

Sometimes grants are made available to fulfill a certain societal or environmental need. These grants are often only made available for a certain amount of time and once they close, are not likely to reopen to another round of funding.

The Government of Canada's Business Benefits Finder is a free resource for finding provincial and federal business grants. Some cities offer small business grants to businesses operating within their municipality. Use a search engine to explore local opportunities as they are not included in the scope of the Business Benefits Finder.
